Why is My Tongue Swollen?

However, there are some instances in which you will need to consult both medical professionals. One such occasion is when your tongue starts swelling for no apparent reason.

Whenever you go to see your dentist, most of the time, it is for routine cleaning. For many other health issues, you simply visit your doctor instead. However, there are some instances in which you will need to consult both medical professionals. One such occasion is when your tongue starts swelling for no apparent reason.

The Possible Causes

One of the most common causes of a swollen tongue is your diet. Depending on the food, medicine, and oral care routine, you could be irritating your tongue without realizing it. Allergies, sports injuries, and bacterial infections can also cause your tongue to look red and angry. Do you love spicy food or habitually use tobacco and alcohol? These three sources can also aggravate the sensitivity of your tongue. You could also need more vitamins or are going through hormonal changes. You might also have dry mouth caused by Sjogren’s syndrome.

Allergens in Your Food

Now let’s look at some potential allergens found in your food. If your mouth itches, then it could be caused by mild seafood or shellfish allergies. Melons, pineapples, and apples are also common food allergies. Peanuts, eggs, nuts, soy, and wheat are other types of food allergies.

Other Possible Allergic Reactions

You could also be suffering from some other allergic reaction. Your tongue, lips, and your entire face can all be affected by a condition called angioedema; this is where the deeper layers of your skin start to swell. Hives, red skin, runny noses, sneezing, and nausea are all symptoms of this issue. Difficulties chewing, swallowing, and breathing all warrant immediate medical attention.

Treatment

With all of that in mind, let’s cover some treatment options. For mild swelling, you can actually leave it alone. It should resolve itself in a few days. If your throat begins to swell or if your tongue is interfering with your breathing, then you will require antihistamines.

Prevention

Avoid anything that might trigger this problem, no matter what it is. Keep notes of when it happens and why it might happen. Lastly, talk to your dentist and doctor to see what you can do to stop it from bothering you again in the future.
