Most would agree that mouth pain is one of the worst pains there is. Things like slight cavities and discomfort can be taken care of in due time, but there are certain oral ailments that should be addressed immediately. Dr. Scott Steckler and Annapolis Dental Care are available to address most dental emergencies same day to help make you more comfortable and ease you through tooth or gum trauma. If the problem is too extensive to address in one sitting, Dr. Steckler will help you with temporary solutions until a permanent fix can be made. The following dental problems should be addressed promptly and are considered dental emergencies.
- Knocked out tooth – If you ever have a tooth knocked out, you should talk to a dentist immediately. Bone could be left behind or there could be a chance for infection. The first thing you should do is gently rinse your mouth with water and call your Annapolis family dentist. If you still have the tooth, bring the tooth with you so your dentist can assess what happened better. It may be possible to reattach the tooth if there’s enough bone left and the tooth has not dried out.
- Fractured tooth – If you’ve fractured a tooth, you should rinse your mouth out with warm water. Avoid anything too hot or cold as it could cause extra pain. Using a cold compress on the outside of your mouth will help reduce swelling and pain, as will ibuprofen (avoid aspirin and acetaminophen). Your Annapolis family dentist may be able to fix the fractured tooth, but if not, it may need to be extracted.
- Tissue damage – Tissue damage in the mouth can be very painful, since the tissue there tends to be very sensitive. If there is any kind of serious damage to the inside of your cheek, lips, or tongue, you should clean it with warm water and either call an emergency dentist or go to the hospital immediately; infection is a huge risk when mouth lacerations are involved.
Emergency dental work is sometimes necessary. You should be prepared in the case of a dental emergency kit. If you already have a first aid kit in your car or home, you should add a few things to it, including the phone number to Annapolis Dental Care, gauze, a container to store a tooth in, and ibuprofen for pain.
