Tooth Hypersensitivity and You

Tooth-hypersensitivity-dental hygiene

Learn about tooth hypersensitivity now so you can keep eating ice cream!

Have you ever bitten into a Popsicle and felt a sharp pain in your tooth, or cringed at something sour, not because of the taste, but because of the ache it caused? If so, you may be struggling with tooth hypersensitivity. The condition can come about for many different reasons, and is one of the most common things people complain to dentists about. Fortunately, there are many things that both you and your dentist can do to help lessen the effects of tooth hypersensitivity so you can go back to enjoying certain foods, without fear of pain.

What causes tooth hypersensitivity?

The surface beneath your gums is called dentin. Dentin is a soft tissue made up of tiny tubes that carry pain inducing things like cold and hot, directly to the pulp of your teeth. This pulp is full of nerves that react strongly to triggers. If your gums pull back and expose the dentin, you’re in for quite a bit of sensitivity and even some pain. This can happen as a result of things like tooth grinding, whitening products, an acidic diet, and age. You can see why tooth hypersensitivity is a common problem. It can simply be tough to avoid.

What can I do?

The only way to get ahead of tooth sensitivity is to be diligent with your dental hygiene. Brush at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, and go to the dentist every six months. Eat a healthy diet that is low on acidic foods, as these can wear away at your enamel, and will be painful to eat if you’re already dealing with sensitivity.

Once the problem has started, talk to your dentist. He or she will recommend a softer toothbrush to use, and toothpaste that will be much gentler on your pearly whites. There are several products designed to desensitize your teeth, and they are a great help to many people.
