Finally, you’re getting a root canal procedure! Soon, your tooth decay and its pain will be permanently gone. But you realize that your root canal procedure is scheduled for several weeks from today, and now you are slightly panicking. What about the pain you’re currently feeling? Fortunately, we have several tips for dealing with tooth pain until you receive your root canal.
Pass on Cold and Hot Beverages and Food
Your teeth are vulnerable right now because your nerves are out in the open to anything they have direct contact with. It can be excruciating without the layer of protection between your tooth’s nerves and anything very hot or cold you consume. So, say no to hot and cold food and beverages for now. Another helpful tip is brushing your teeth with warm water rather than cold water. Additionally, you can apply a cold compress or ice to the outside of your cheek to control the pain and inflammation.
Avoid Sugar and Acid
Furthermore, avoid foods and beverages that are high in sugar or acid. These will worsen your tooth decay over time, leading to more pain. Break the cycle and temporarily say no to the following:
- Sodas
- Ice Cream
- Candy
- Fruit Juice
- Citrus
- Lemonade
- Hot Chocolate
- Coffee
Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
In addition, talk to your dentist in regards to tooth pain management. This is because you may be on certain medications that your dentist is unaware of. As long as your dentist agrees, you can take an OTC pain reliever such as ibuprofen. Also, never use oral pain medication because the chemical can burn on your gums, thus increasing your pain. And remember, don’t cancel your root canal appointment if the pain improves. Tooth decay doesn’t go away by itself!
Lastly, we understand it’s painful, but it’s critical not to stop brushing or flossing your damaged teeth. Maintaining your mouth clean can lessen your discomfort.
