Now that Thanksgiving is over, you might still be finishing some leftover pie. But pie isn’t the only sweet treat you can overindulge on this holiday season. Here are some helpful tips for preventing any cavities that come from all the food you eat this holiday season.
Skip Seasonal Treats
During the holiday season, there are chocolate coins available or candy canes and many other seasonal treats that are only available during this time of year. It’s tempting to indulge in them, but if you’re worried about developing cavities, then you’re better off skipping them this year. Instead, treat yourself to what you like and can have more often without much guilt. That way, you will do much less damage to your teeth.
Brush More Often
Brushing your teeth becomes even more important during the holidays. Many holidays throughout the year, such as Easter and Halloween, emphasize candy consumption. But the winter holidays do this just as much, if not more. This means that you should take every available opportunity to brush your teeth. Even if you’re enjoying one last round of hot chocolate before bed, be sure to go and brush once you’re done, so the sugar doesn’t linger on your teeth.
Carry Dental Care Supplies
You never know when your next set of cavities will start growing. That’s why in all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, you should remember to carry dental care supplies with you. Wherever you go – to work, on vacation, or to the grocery store – you can use toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash whenever you need them.
Chew Some Gum
You can also chew some gum, just make sure that it’s sugar-free! When you chew gum, it stimulates saliva production. The saliva in your mouth can carry away germs and bacteria that would otherwise sit on your teeth, gums, and tongue. You can pick your favorite flavor and still get all the benefits, along with that taste that you enjoy. But if you do all of this and still think your cavities are getting worse, then it might be time to see your dentist.
