Every six months or so, you’re supposed to have a dental cleaning. But for one reason or another, you’re overcome with anxiety when it’s time for your appointment. Here are some ways to start getting past your fear of the dentist and see that it’s really not that scary.

Types of Fears

Needles: Being afraid of needles isn’t something that only applies when you go to the dentist. It could get in the way when you go to donate blood, or you need blood work done when you visit the hospital. Talk to your dentist to see if they gave give you numbing treatments or use painless injections instead.

Drills: It’s also perfectly understandable to be afraid of dental drills. The sound of the drill alone can make you start to shiver and shake. Still, with numbing treatments, you won’t feel much of anything except for the pressure of the drill being pressed against your mouth.

Pain: It’s normal to be afraid of pain. In fact, you might go out of your way to avoid any pain at all. Still, nervousness and tension can make the pain even worse. Try relaxing and take a few deep breaths to help you calm down.

Embarrassment: Your dentist is supposed to help you diagnose, treat, and fix dental problems. They’re not going to judge you for having chipped, broken, or damaged teeth. Even if they admonish you to brush more often or to use more floss, they are still trying to help you.

Overcoming Your Fear

Figure out exactly what scares you or what makes you nervous about seeing the dentist. Once you do that, you’re already on the road to getting past your phobia.

Find a brand new dentist who will listen to your concerns and reassure you that it won’t be as bad as you are expecting. Any dentist who can make you laugh and smile while explaining dentistry lingo to your in plain English can help you feel better.

Bring a friend or family member with you for moral support. Even if they are in the waiting room and can’t be in the exam room with you, it’ll make your next cleaning go better if you know they are at least nearby.

Lastly, ask for relaxation dentistry measures, such as nitrous oxide gas, that can help make the whole experience less intimidating and even funny.
