The Importance of Dental Public Health

Three groups of people who might neglect their dental health, or won’t get the care they need, include young students, senior citizens, and expectant mothers. Let’s take a closer look at the importance of dental public health for these three groups, and how it can benefit everyone else as well.

What do we mean when we say “dental public health”? Well, dental health is important for everyone. Three groups of people who might neglect their dental health, or won’t get the care they need, include young students, senior citizens, and expectant mothers. Let’s take a closer look at the importance of dental public health for these three groups, and how it can benefit everyone else as well.

Dental Public Health and Students

Did you know that a child’s dental health affects their overall health? Yes, just like with adults, something wrong in the mouth can make the entire body feel sick. For young students, their health can seriously affect how well they do in school. A study conducted by the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California found discovered a link between dental problems poor grades, and trouble attending school for such students.

However, it is important to note that this link was only a correlation, and was not definitive as the cause. However, providing children with dental sealants can help them. Multiple states have begun a program where children from low-income backgrounds who are at risk for developing cavities can get the dental care they so desperately need.

Senior Citizens

You may remember a series we ran several months ago about the importance of senior citizen dental care. For many older adults, the rising cost of proper dental care is what keeps them from schedule any necessary appointments. However, avoiding the care they need will only make any problems they have that much worse. Did you know that about 23% of adults between the ages of 65 and 74 are at risk for gum disease? Seniors in low-income circumstances have even higher risks.

Expectant Mothers

Lastly, let’s have a look at dental care for expectant mothers. When a mom-to-be is pregnant, they might not realize just how important their dental hygiene is. But any problems that do pop up can be trouble not only for them but for the baby too. Through resources such as the app called Text4Baby, mothers can get information about their growing babies while also scheduling reminders to make appointments to see their doctor and more importantly, their dentists too.
