Bleeding, swollen, and red gums are all symptoms of gingivitis. But do you really know what gingivitis is or what treatments are available to you? We can help!
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that can cause irritation, redness, and swelling of the gums. Because it is considered mild, you may not be aware of the condition. But gingivitis can lead to more serious forms of gum disease and eventually tooth loss if it is not taken care of promptly. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene.
Symptoms of Gingivitis
These symptoms can vary from person to person, but the most tell-tale sign of gingivitis are the coloration of your gums. Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. But gums that are infected with gingivitis are dusky red, puffy, and bleed easily. Other signs and symptoms include receding gums, tenderness, and bad breath.
Who is at Risk?
The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that encourages plaque to form around your gums. Plaque is the sticky film on your teeth that is actually bacteria. When you brush your teeth, the plaque is removed. But skipping a brushing session can allow plaque to keep growing and harden on your teeth and gums forming cavities and tartar. Many people experience gum problems during puberty to varying degrees and can develop them throughout their lives. But there are some people who are more likely to get gingivitis: tobacco users, diabetics, the elderly, with decreased immunity due to illness or disease, who are on certain medications, have viral or fungal medications, have dry mouth, experience hormonal changes, have poor nutrition, have substance abuse problems, and who have ill-fitting dental restorations.
Gingivitis can affect many different people throughout many different stages of life. If you have experienced these symptoms and suspect you have gingivitis, call Annapolis Dental Care today for a checkup and treatment.
