If you’ve recently needed to have your wisdom teeth removed, it more than likely filled you with dread. But once it’s time to recover, you can always make it easier for yourself to feel better. Just follow some of our pointers about what to do after you get your wisdom teeth removed.
After the Wisdom Teeth Are Gone
Most of the time, our anxieties stem from uncertainty about the future. That future could be what happens after we leave school, once we begin a new career, or after we are longer covered by a parent’s health insurance. Anxiety over the outcome of a wisdom tooth being extracted isn’t much different. You’ll experience facial pain and swelling for about the next three days after your surgery. An ice pack can help, but only for the first two days. After that, you might want to apply some heat to quell the pain instead.
You might also encounter some bleeding. This bleeding is perfectly normal. Wait a few hours after your procedure is over, and then start changing the gauze in your mouth either every half an hour or every hour. Apply pressure by biting down on the gauze to make the bleeding stop.
What You Should Do
Brush your teeth: As always, you shouldn’t hesitate to brush your teeth. The same night as your surgery you can brush, in fact, as long as you don’t push too hard. However, you should give it a day before you start rinsing again, at which point, use an 8-ounce cup of warm water mixed with some salt to rinse 5 or 6 times a day, and don’t forget to do so after you eat.
Take medicine: If you need pain relief or antibiotics, continue to take them based on your doctor’s advice.
Sleep: Get plenty of rest, because you’ll need it. Plus, for the first day or so, you should avoid any physical exertion. Don’t lay your head down on the side where you had your wisdom teeth extracted.
Try some tea: Tannic acid is a key component of tea, which can stop bleeding and close the blood vessels temporarily.
