Over the years, dentures have remained one of the most popular and effective ways to replace missing and surrounding teeth. Dentures can either be complete or partial.
- Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. These dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. Because of this, conventional dentures are typically not ready for placement in the mouth until eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures, meanwhile, are ready immediately (who would have thought?). However, due to changes in the mouth during the healing process, immediate dentures require several adjustments to fit properly. Because of this, immediate dentures are considered a temporary solution.
- Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. These dentures typically consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base. Partial dentures are connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.
Then there are dental implants, which can be used to support permanently cemented bridges, eliminating the need for a denture. While this procedure will cost more than dentures, dental implants more closely mimic the look and feel of real teeth.
