What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over weak or damaged tooth.
Why do I need a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are used in the following situations:
- To protect a weak tooth or to prevent further damage of a broken tooth. If a tooth has sustained enough damage or decay to cause you pain or threaten the health of your mouth but not enough to warrant extraction, a crown is a great solution for preventing further problems while preserving much of your real tooth.
- To cover a severely discolored or misshapen tooth. Dental crowns are an effective way to enhance your smile!
- To cover a dental implant
- To hold a dental bridge in place. If you’ve lost a tooth completely, two crowns and a false tooth called a “pontic” can be used to to create a bridge that will fill in the gap.
Your existing tooth anchors the crown in place while the crown protects the tooth by covering it completely (as opposed to a veneer, which covers just the front of the tooth).
How long do Dental Crowns last?
Dental crowns can last anywhere from 5 years to 15 years, depending on the amount of wear and tear the crown is exposed to and how well you follow good oral hygiene practices.
