There are no two ways about it: you’ve got to brush your teeth at least once a day. It’s better if you do it more often than that. In fact, brushing your teeth twice a day is even more beneficial and effective. Once when you wake up and once at bedtime is a good rule of thumb.
Remove Bacteria
Brushing your teeth every day removes bits of bacteria that are trapped in your mouth. That’s why you’ve also got to use mouthwash and floss every day as well. If you don’t do anything about the bacteria in your mouth, then you might end up suffering damage to the enamel and roots of your teeth, leading to gum disease and tooth decay.
Encourage Saliva
You produce more saliva when you’re awake; you produce less saliva when you are asleep. Saliva provides another line of defense against bacteria that could cause cavities and other dental health concerns. Plus, brushing your teeth at night helps guard against morning breath when you wake up.
Prevent Tartar
Another reason to brush your teeth every day is to prevent tartar buildup from happening. If you don’t, then this substance will cling to your tooth enamel. The longer you neglect this part of your oral care routine, the harder it will be to remove the offending tartar; you’ll need to go see your dentist for a cleaning. Scaling and root planing, or SRP, might be needed and that is deeper than just a regular cleaning you get when you visit your dentist. If left unaddressed, you could get infected gums that will bleed, which is as unpleasant as it sounds.
Protect Your Gums
Gum health is just as important as tooth health. Brushing and flossing do improve your smile, but that’s not all! Plaque, bacteria, and tartar can all build up leading to various stages of gum disease. When you brush your teeth, be sure to spend some time brushing your gums and your tongue, too. By doing all this, you can ensure that you have better oral hygiene.
