How to Fight Plaque

How to Fight Plaque

Plaque and tartar are often mentioned together.

Plaque and tartar are often mentioned together. They’re also the leading causes of gum disease and can make bad breath even worse. If you’re not sure how to fight plaque, then you’ve come to the right place. Brushing, flossing, and mouthwash are all effective ways to improve your dental and oral health, but here are some other methods you might not realize make a difference, too.

The Difference

Before we can begin our examination of remedies, it’s helpful to spell out the differences between plaque and tartar. In simplest terms, plaque refers to the bacteria that cause bad breath and enamel erosion that manifest as cavities. The tartar is the visible evidence of these germs taking over your mouth. Unfortunately, the longer the tartar goes untreated, the deeper the staining on the teeth. A relatively simple way to get rid of it is to visit your dentist.

Use Baking Soda

That said, you can also try other solutions. Although baking soda sounds like it won’t help, you’ll be surprised when it does. One tablespoon of baking soda should be enough, along with some salt. Once you’ve made this mixture, you can use it a substitute for regular toothpaste until the tartar starts to disappear.

Try a Different Toothbrush

Speaking of toothpaste, you can also choose a new toothbrush. Find one with softer bristles to reduce any potential damage to the surface of your teeth. Harder bristles aren’t necessarily more effective, and neither is brushing more forcefully. Electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, have been known to be more effective when it comes to a plaque infestation. Thus, if you have a manual toothbrush, experiment with using an electric one for the time being.

Drink More Water

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining a healthy mouth. You also feel much better when you’re drinking enough water. So if you haven’t been drinking enough water, start doing so.  When your mouth waters, it could be a sign that you aren’t getting enough fluids. Plus, drinking water with every meal can help clear away debris that will otherwise linger on your teeth.
