One of the things that many people wish they had is whiter teeth. A bright smile can help you feel more confident when you walk into a room and give you a great self-esteem boost. There are a few different whitening techniques that you can use to turn your teeth a few shades whiter. At Annapolis Dental Care, we use bleach trays as well as gel in office. We also recommend that you have your teeth professionally whitened. We know exactly what is in our products and how they will affect your mouth – over the counter products can’t always claim the same thing. Before you decide to get your teeth whitened, you need to know whether or not you’re a good candidate for teeth whitening!
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Whitening Your Teeth
- Are my teeth extremely sensitive? If your teeth are sensitive to begin with, whitening may make it even worse. Though whitening agents aren’t necessarily harmful, they can cause your teeth to become more sensitive. You may also be allergic to the whitening agent. It’s always best to talk with your Annapolis family dentist before making any decisions on having sensitive teeth whitened.
- Are there any existing problems with my teeth? If you already have cavities, gum disease, or previous restorations, you’re going to be discouraged from having your teeth whitened. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it can’t be done, but it may cause more problems than it solves. Restorations may cause the bleach or gel to whiten unevenly. Talk to your dentist about porcelain veneers if he or she discourages you from whitening.
- Am I old enough to have my teeth whitened? Young teens are known to want the bright white smiles that they see actresses and singers with. We discourage having your teeth whitened prior to the age of 16 (at the earliest). We also recommend that those who are pregnant or breast feeding hold off on having their teeth whitened. Otherwise, we encourage you to talk to your dentist about professional teeth whitening.
