Take Care of Your Teeth During Pregnancy

Pregnancy dental care

Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you should ignore your teeth.

If you are pregnant or looking to become pregnant, follow this list of 8 do’s and don’ts to keep you, your mouth, and your baby healthy during pregnancy.

Do:

  1. Try to schedule a routine dental care exam before you become pregnant. That way your dentist can assess any problems or procedures you might need done before your pregnancy. But don’t worry, if you need an emergency procedure, your dentist will be able to take care if it even if you are pregnant.
  2. Tell your dentist if you are pregnant! That way he can look at what over the counter medicines or prenatal vitamins you are taking and how they might affect dental health. He will also make sure that if any x-rays are needed, he can fully cover the abdomen and thyroid. Advances in technology have made dental x-rays during pregnancy OK, as long as those parts are protected.
  3. Tell your obstetrician if you are going to the dentist! She may advise you on any special precautions to take.
  4. Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash, or brush your teeth if you have morning sickness. Stomach acid can cause erosion of the enamel and damage dental health. If your toothpaste gives you nausea, ask your dentist for a mild but effective recommendation to keep your teeth healthy.
  5. Drink water! Hormonal changes can also cause dry mouth, which can lead to tooth decay. Drinking plenty of water can keep your mouth hydrated.
  6. As always, eat a healthy diet. Avoiding sugar and starches can help keep your teeth healthy, and during pregnancy, can help keep you and your baby healthy too!

Don’t:

  1. Stop regular dental care. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy. The hormonal changes your body experiences during pregnancy can cause changes in your gums, including increased sensitivity and bleeding. Regular care can help.
  2. Schedule cosmetic or elective procedures. If you are looking for a cosmetic procedure, consider getting it done before you are pregnant to avoid the extra steps that may be needed during pregnancy.
