Choosing Your Dental Hygiene Routine

Dental Hygiene Routine

Your dental hygiene routine is an important part of your day. Make sure you know what you are doing!

Choosing your dental hygiene routine can be difficult if you do not know where to start. You have been told all of your life to brush twice a day, but is that all you need to do to maintain a healthy smile? Well, we have some answers to your questions about your new dental hygiene maintenance.

Brushing

While brushing your teeth alone isn’t enough for your dental hygiene routine, it is an important part of it. In order to maintain your current health or to improve it, you should be brushing at least twice a day. Hold your brush at a 45 degree angles and brush all surfaces of your teeth. When choosing a toothbrush, it is important to choose the right type. Talk with your Annapolis Dental Care dentist about the bristles of your toothbrush and whether you need to use a softer brush or a harder bristle.

Flossing

While brushing will remove the surface plaque, it cannot quite reach the plaque in between your teeth. To clear off of your plaque away, it is important to floss your teeth once a day. Take a piece of dental floss about 17 inches long and slip the ends around your fingers for control. Gently push the floss between your teeth and slide up and down, making sure to scrape the sides. Repeat this for every tooth, unwinding the floss from your fingers as you work.

Rinsing

While most people rinse with water after brushing your teeth, it is important to rinse with a mouthwash. Mouthwashes provide your teeth with extra fluoride that is needed to help keep them at top strength. Take a small sip of mouthwash and swish it around in your mouth, making sure to swish for about 40 seconds. Make sure to spit it out and not swallow the liquid as it could cause stomach problems.

Cleaning Your Tongue

This is also an important step to having a clean mouth, but it can be done several different ways. If you are using your toothbrush, brush your tongue with toothpaste in circular motions then rinse. For floss cleaning, take a clean piece of floss and work it down your tongue, scrapping off any foods leftover.
