How to Care for Your Dental Implant

Dental implant

It is important for you to take care of your dental implant as you would any other tooth.

Dental implants today require almost the same type of care as natural teeth. You need to make sure to keep your dental implants clean and free of plaque by brushing and flossing daily. Cleaning is really important after meals, just like with natural teeth. Let’s take a look at how to properly care for your new dental implant.

Tools for Dental Implants

One of the most common tools for dental implants will be a small, soft, manual toothbrush. This will be similar to the toothbrush you are accustomed to, but you will want to make sure that the bristles are in fact soft. Bristles that are too hard are not good for natural teeth to begin with, but extra hard bristles are especially not good with for a dental implant. The key is to clean you dental implant and teeth effectively, but not cause damage by scrubbing too hard with a tough bristle. Also, you will want to use low-abrasive toothpaste. Your dentist will also recommend using a tartar-control toothpaste to make sure that your implant remains clean, and you will need a dental floss that cleans around your abutments.

Recommended Supplies for Dental Implants

Aside from everything mentioned above, your dentist may also recommend several other supplies for your dental implant. One of those supplies will be an antimicrobial mouth rinse. This will help fight cavities and kill germs. Depending on the individual patient, dentists sometimes will recommend inter-dental brushes to remove plaque that is stuck between your teeth on either side of your implant. Finally, your dentist may recommend using a disclosing tablet. These tablets will stain the locations of plaque accumulation. Again, all of these recommended supplies would depend on the individual patient. Make sure to consult with your dentist before purchasing any additional supplies for your dental implants that you feel you may need.

Check in with Your Dentist

While establishing a daily dental hygiene routine is critical, it’s also important that you make regular visits to your dentist. You should see your dentist every three to six months for cleanings, and it’s also a good time to discuss any issues you may have with your dental implant. For your dental implant, you will want to get an x-ray of it annually to make sure it is holding up.

Problems with Dental Implants

If you don’t take care of your implants with daily care, you could quickly start to experience a lot of different problems. The earliest sign of a problem will be if your teeth are bleeding. This is known as mucositis, and it can eventually lead to bone loss.
